The Story Behind The African Dreamer Blog
As a South African, my love for travel was sparked at the tender age of four when my family and I ventured to our neighbouring island, Mauritius. While I was too young to remember all the details, some moments stand out in vivid clarity: the strong scents of vegetable markets, the sun warming the Seven Coloured Earths, the slow crawl of giant tortoises, and the sweet taste of fresh coconuts. These fleeting memories of the beautiful island has stayed with me.
It wasn’t until my late teens that nostalgia turned into something much deeper, a longing to explore. It was the faded memories of Mauritius that sparked the longing in me to return to the island. That longing did, however, encourage me to sit back and appreciate the many reasons that thousands of people flock to South Africa, and in doing so, I realized that there, too, is a whole world out there that is worthy of being appreciated and discovered. What started as a longing to return to Mauritius grew into a passion for discovering everything beyond the borders of my homeland. This passion has fueled my journey ever since.
With a background in the tourism industry, I have had the privilege of documenting and coordinating memorable travel experiences for others. However, I felt something was missing. I wanted a more personal connection to the adventures I was helping others experience. That’s what led me to start this blog, to not only share my own travels but to tell the stories behind them.
Every adventure shared here comes from my own personal experiences. It gives me the opportunity to be both the storyteller and the traveller, with every adventure offering a new story to tell. From vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes to the unique people and traditions I have encountered, each destination holds a piece of magic waiting to be shared.
